DMDM Hydantoin
A water-soluble, broad-spectrum preservative that works by gradually releasing small amounts of formaldehyde to control bacteria, yeast, and mold in skin- and hair-care products. Effective in both rinse-off and leave-on formulations when used within regulatory limits. (INCI: DMDM Hydantoin)

Internal Reference:
DMDM-09251
Widely used in surfactant systems (cleansers, body wash, shampoo) and in emulsions (creams/lotions). Easy to add to the aqueous phase and remains effective over a wide pH range. Because it is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, it is best to formulate at the lowest effective dose and include a chelating agent (e.g., disodium EDTA).
Benefits:
● Broad-spectrum protection against bacteria, yeast, and mold
● Water-soluble and easy to incorporate
● Effective across an approximate pH range of 3–9
● Suitable for both rinse-off and leave-on products
● Good compatibility with anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric systems
●
Can be
boosted with co-preservatives when needed
How to use:
● Add to the aqueous phase or during cool-down (≤ 45–50 °C) with moderate stirring.
● Typical working pH range: 3–9 (optimal around 5–8).
● Use the lowest level that achieves efficacy and perform microbiological challenge testing.
● Avoid excessive heat/prolonged heating to minimize loss of activity.
●
Comply with
labeling requirements for formaldehyde releasers and applicable limits; patch
testing is advisable for sensitive skin.
Recommended usage levels in skincare:
● Leave-on creams/lotions/serums: 0.1–0.4%
●
Rinse-off
cleansers, body wash, shampoo: 0.2–0.6%
Solubility:
● Soluble in water, alcohol, and many glycols
●
Insoluble in
oils and non-polar solvents
Applications:
● Facial and body cleansers; shower gels
● Shampoos and scalp cleansers
● Face and body creams and lotions
● Hand and foot care creams
●
Makeup
removers with an appropriate preservation system
Storage:
Keep tightly closed, protected from
light and moisture, at a moderate temperature (below 25 °C). Ensure adequate
ventilation for large containers and avoid prolonged heat exposure.
