Humectants are ingredients commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products to help moisturize the skin by attracting water and retaining moisture. They work by drawing water from the environment or from deeper layers of the skin and locking it into the outermost layer of the skin, also known as the stratum corneum. Some common examples of humectants used in cosmetics and personal care products include:

  • Hyaluronic acid: A naturally occurring molecule in the skin that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. It is commonly used in serums, moisturizers, and other anti-aging products.

  • Sorbitol: A sugar alcohol that is commonly used in skincare and oral care products.

  • Propylene glycol: A synthetic compound that is commonly used in a wide range of cosmetic and personal care products as a humectant, solvent, and preservative.

Humectants can help to improve the overall hydration and appearance of the skin by reducing dryness, flakiness, and roughness.
